Conference, Convention, Seminar, Summit- there are many different names for an event where people are gathered to learn about and discuss a common interest. I believe conferences are a crucial element for anyone who is committed to their career and has a desire to improve year after year.
I recently attended the Tom Ferry Success Summit which is a business conference geared towards Real Estate professionals. This was my 3rd year in a row. I’ve been reflecting on all the benefits I have received from these conferences and feel they apply across industries.
LEARN
The primary reason most attend a conference is to learn. Typically, attendees learn about the latest research, trends and tech developments in the industry. A persistent theme of my conference was discussing the rise of ibuyers (Zillow, Redfin, Opendoor, etc) and the consumer flight to quality. Consumers like to push a button and instantly receive their dinner or clothes, but they want a more concierge, white-glove experience when buying or selling a home.
GROW
Many conferences challenge attendees to grow and push past their limits or perceived limits. Knowing what to do is not enough. You have to understand your strengths and weaknesses in order to truly succeed in business. A good conference will focus on personal development in addition to professional development. Each conference forces me to really analyze my beliefs and question if I’m doing certain things in order to stay in my comfort zone. I’m at a different place in my life at each conference so I’m continuously peeling back layers.
NETWORK
Networking is a major reason people attend conferences. Being around like-minded people is absolutely invigorating. Additionally, interacting with people from different backgrounds, different markets and different experience levels can lead to new insights and expand your mind. In real estate, it is crucial to network with top agents from all around the country so I know who to refer my clients to when they relocate out of Sacramento. When I meet an agent at a Tom Ferry conference, I know they are a top agent, focused on continuously improving themselves and their business, like me!
HAVE FUN/RECHARGE
It’s not just about the actual things you learn at the conference. It’s about the whole experience of stepping away from your business and your city for a little while. Sometimes we can’t see the forest through the trees and stepping back can give the space and perspective to realize the next major move that needs to be made. It’s great to take a break from routine and dare I say, kids and partners. Being in another city also provides an opportunity to explore a town you may not have
